The grooming shelf at any barbershop can be confusing. Pomade, fiber, clay, paste, wax. The labels don't always explain what the product does or who it's for. This is a plain guide to the four main types we stock and recommend at Charcoal Unit, based on what we see working on real hair every day.
Water-based pomade: the most versatile ¶
Water-based pomades like Layrite Original are the easiest to work with. They wash out with water, they don't build up on the scalp, and they work on most hair types from straight to slightly wavy. The hold is medium and the shine ranges from low to high depending on the formula. If you're not sure where to start, this is where to start. The Layrite Original is the product we reach for most often in the shop.
Oil-based pomade: for a classic slick finish ¶
Oil-based pomades give a higher shine and a firmer hold, but they don't wash out easily. You'll need a clarifying shampoo or a dish soap to remove them properly. They're the right choice if you want a very defined, slick style that holds all day. Not ideal for fine hair, which they can weigh down. We don't stock oil-based pomades at Charcoal Unit because most of our clients prefer the washability of water-based formulas.
Fiber and paste: for texture and movement ¶
Fiber pomades like the Reuzel Fiber give a matte or low-shine finish with a flexible hold. They're the right choice for textured, wavy, or curly hair where you want definition without stiffness. They also work well on short to medium straight hair where you want a natural, undone look. Rui recommends these to most of his curly-haired clients as a daily product.
Clay: for fine or thin hair ¶
Clay products absorb oil and add volume, which makes them useful for fine or thin hair that tends to go flat. The hold is usually medium to strong and the finish is matte. The downside is that clay can dry out the scalp with daily use, so it's better as a two or three times a week product rather than an everyday one. We occasionally stock a clay from Bairro Alto Supply when they have it available.
If you're not sure which product suits your hair, ask when you come in. We'd rather spend two minutes explaining than have you buy something that doesn't work.
